Workers Accommodation

Transforming Food Waste Management in Worker Accommodations with ORCA Digesters

Addressing the Challenge of High-Volume Food Waste

In our client’s facility management of several workers accommodations, we cater to tens of thousands of people daily, providing three to five meals around the clock. This scale of operation results in a substantial amount of food waste, presenting challenges in disposal, operational improvement, cost reduction, and minimizing environmental impact.

Since early 2018, our partnership with these accommodations has led to significant improvements across these areas.

The Impact of ORCA Biodigesters

The ORCA systems efficiently convert food waste into wastewater, greatly reducing the volume of waste sent to landfills and bringing multiple benefits:

  1. Reduced Landfill Waste: Dramatic decrease in waste sent to landfills.
  2. Operational Efficiency: ORCA units at various stations allow for detailed monitoring and analysis of food waste sources.
  3. Cost Reduction: Lower food waste management costs and reduced need for resources like plastic bags.
  4. Decreased Environmental Footprint: Significant cutback in CO2 emissions, stemming from minimized waste transportation and landfill use.

Wastewater Treatment and Reuse

An additional benefit of the ORCA system is the treatment of the resulting wastewater using on-site STPs. The treated water is then repurposed for irrigation, contributing to sustainable water use and enhancing the green initiatives at the accommodations.

This process not only conserves water resources but also demonstrates an innovative approach to creating a circular economy within our facilities.

Data-Driven Strategies and Behavioral Interventions

The ORCA’s cloud-based technology provides vital data, offering insights into waste production patterns. Analyzing details like plate leftovers has led to the identification of behavioral factors contributing to waste.

Initiatives such as competitions and reward systems have effectively encouraged better waste practices among workers, promoting environmental awareness and reducing waste.

Customized Waste Management Solutions

Recognizing the unique requirements of each accommodation, we conducted thorough audits to identify optimal locations for ORCA installations, with some sites operating multiple units.

The adaptability of the ORCA system is key in managing waste efficiently at various stages of food handling, leading to improved menu planning and inventory control, further preventing unnecessary waste.

Transforming Waste Management in Worker Accommodations

The introduction of ORCA biodigesters has been instrumental in advancing waste reduction and cost control across worker accommodations. This initiative not only highlights the effectiveness of the ORCA system but also underscores our commitment to sustainable and environmentally responsible facility management.
